Initiative on Dimensional Tolerances in Construction Dimensional Tolerances for Surface Accessibility
The Access Board set out to clarify issues on the topic of industry tolerances that specifically affect accessibility. For this project, they recruited professional organizations and private companies to provide feedback on what the accepted tolerances and measuring techniques should be. They then developed suggestions based on this feedback to eliminate as much confusion as possible.
It’s Time for the Homebuilding Industry to Take Universal Design Seriously

Some feel there is a disproportionate amount of attention paid to Universal Design in academia versus the housing construction and remodeling market. The lack of familiarity with Universal Design Principles as well as a no “solid facts, figures, and numbers” may prevent investment in Universally Designed developments. However, there are examples of successful academic / professional collaborations in discussing and promoting Universal Design, including Milwaukee’s Housing Authority and University of Cincinnati’s partnership with Habitat for Humanity.

Small Bathroom Remodel Brings Big 'Aging in Place' Benefits to Portland Home
Hammer and Hand is a remodeling contractor in Portland proving that limited space cannot be used as an excuse for not using Universal Design. At the request of a homeowner whose goal is to age in place, they were able to create a universally designed bathroom with a nine square feet project. The homeowner has a strong desire to stay in her current home and designed the remodel herself to fit her needs.
Aging in Place Tips for Your Bathroom Design
As people age it becomes increasingly more difficult for them to remain in their home because most homes are designed with the assumption that the occupant has full mobility and dexterity. The bathroom poses one of the primary obstacles for someone to age-in-place. The slippery surfaces, elements requiring tight pinching and grasping, and the need to sit and stand all contribute to a potentially hazardous space. Klaff's home design products offer solutions to assure that the bathroom supports the aging process and eliminates some of the greatest risks of aging at home.
