Multigenerational Community Planning: Linking the Needs of Children and Older Adults

Elderly man and child laughingBy 2040, the percentage of Americans over 65 will be 20 percent, while those under 18 will be almost 23 percent. With almost half of the population being made up of children and older adults, it is time that we begin to recognize the social and economic interdependence of the generations.

Doing so will require new collaboration across the generations, civic participation, and community planning that can address the needs of both children and older adults.  In this article, Esther Greenhouse, George Homsy, and Mildred Warner of Cornell University asses America's changing demographics and the need for a new multi-generational approach to community planning.
