When Hand-waving Makes for Good Scientific Discussion

sign interpreter and doctorWhen sign language interpreters, like Maureen Wagner, have to translate technical secientific lectures, like those given at the American Association for the Advancement of Sciece, they face many challenges.

Firstly, many scientific terms have no corresponding sign in American Sign Language (ASL.) Secondly, the sign language interpreter may not be familar with the technical jargon that she needs to translate. Interpreters will recieve advance copies of the talks that they are translating, so that they can brush up on all of the technical terms and plan out how they will be translated. The interpretor then has three options, use related terms that are available in ASL, transliterate the word using Manually Coded English (MCE) or even invent new gestures that within the context of the talk will clearly sign out the needed technical term.
