Blake Drucker Architects Chemistry Workstation at University of California, Berkeley

chemistry_workstationThe Chemistry Workstation was developed by Bonnie Blake‑Drucker and was installed in 1995 at the University of Berkeley for use by freshman chemistry students.  The workstation is the result of a survey of the UC Disabled Student Association and research into all available laboratory products.

This design exemplifies the following Principles of Universal Design:

Equitable Use: No one is disadvantaged or stigmatized by this design; Flexibility in Use: The design accommodates a wide range of individual preferences and abilities.  The workstation is designed to be easily adjustable to students’ needs without assistance from maintenance staff.  Powered height adjustment makes the workstation equally usable for seated or standing students.

Simple and Intuitive Use: There are familiar elements that facilitate ease of use;

Perceptible Information: The design communicates necessary information effectively to the user, regardless of ambient conditions or the user’s sensory abilities.   Braille labels next to controls and gritty textures on faucets help identify controls;

Tolerance for Error: The design minimizes hazards and the adverse consequences of accidental or unintended actions.  A stainless steel trough runs the length of the countertop to prevent spillage onto the lap of a seated student.

Low Physical Effort: The adjustments are powered and easy to use.  A flexible drainage pipe supports ease of use.

Size and Space for Approach and Use: Appropriate size and space is provided for approach, reach, manipulation, and use, regardless of the user’s body size, posture, or mobility.  Height adjustment of the hood is accomplished by activating a remote control button.
