September 2012: SURFACE Inclusive Design Research Centre at the University of Salford

SURFACE is one of ten specialist Research Centres within the School of the Built Environment at the University of Salford. We were founded in 1999, six years in advance of changes to UK building regulations to improve access to and use of the built environment.

Accessibility and Inclusive Design is an online distance-learning programme run by the SURFACE Inclusive Design Research Centre at the University of Salford. Offering three levels of postgraduate award, it is aimed at professionals from a range of backgrounds – including planning, architecture, access auditing, health and social care – and is suitable for studying part-time while employed (anywhere in the world). Modules place an emphasis on 'live' problems, using real-world techniques and instruments; enabling students to undertake projects in their own area of expertise, as well as widen their understanding of the needs of others, be they clients, users, planners, designers or health professionals. Many students remain within their field of expertise to facilitate change and improve professional standards; others move into specialist disciplines, such as access consultancy.

The Accessibility & Inclusive Design programme comprises three levels of award:

Master of Science (180 credits, 32 months minimum study time, 4 taught modules & dissertation)

Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits, 20/24 months minimum study time, 4 taught modules)

Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits, 8/12 months minimum study time, 2 taught modules)

Start dates are in September and January of each year, with the shortest minimum study time being eight months.
