Disabled to Get Discount on White Plains Cab Rides

A one year pilot-program starting in White Plains, NY, will allow people with disabilities who use the ParaTransit transportation system to opt for a discounted taxi ride rather than a shared van. Providing the option of a discounted taxi ride, allows the county's ParaTransit service to decrease its use of large transport vans which are expensive to buy and not at all fuel efficient to use. The county will still retain some large sized vans to accommodate passengers in wheelchairs or who otherwise need the mechanical lift. The new Bee-Line Taxi program will allow people with disabilities who are able to ride in conventional taxis the choice of a more efficient and cost-effective option. People making use of the Bee-Line Taxis program will pay the same $4 fee as those using the traditional ParaTransit options, but while it costs the county $50 per ride taken in a large sized transit van, they estimate that it will only cost the county $10 per each ride taken in the Bee-Line Taxis program.
