Universal Design Certified Professional (UDCP) Program

The National Association of the Remodeling Industry Logo, hosts of the Universal Design Certified Professional Program. The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) is offering universal design certification through their Universal Design Certified Professional (UDCP) Program. The program will focus on providing more extensive knowledge in the following areas of universal design and universal remodeling:

  • Universal Design Fundamentals
    This section will include the core concepts of universal design and its common terms, how to create and provide cost comparisons between universal design and retirement community living, the principals of universal design vs. the Americans With Disabilities Act building codes, and the target client base.

  • Client Needs Assessments
    Creating and conducting a productve client interview, assess the need for a universal design professional on any given project, and provide outside support systems for clients to conserve quality of life.

Free DOJ Webinars Address 2010 Pool Regulations

The Department of Justice will be offering two free webinars in early May addressing the 2010 ADA Regulations on pools. They will provide clarification and technical assistance on accessible pool entry for existing public pools covered under title III of the ADA, and state and local government facilities with existing pools under title II of the ADA. The webinars are slated to occur May 2, 2012 and May 9, 2012 beginning at 2:30 P.M. and ending at 3:45 P.M EDT. They will be available for download in the ADA archives on www.ADA.gov at their completion.

Designing A Socially Sustainable Bathroom

This course makes the case that Universal Design and Environmentally Sustainable Design should be merged into Socially Sustainable Design and become part of the best practices used in all good design. It focuses on the designing of bathrooms or rest rooms that will not only be friendly and accessible to all but represent the state of the art in water efficiency and disease free surfaces . The resulting bathroom needs to provide comfort and facility for allowing the resident to meet their goal of aging in place while preserving health, independence and dignity. The attendee also will receive information on tools which reduce design time and help meet the criteria for LEED certification.

This course provides an in depth look at one industry, mass transportation. Strategies for introducing universal design in this sector are described with examples from around the world. * AIA members will receive 15 HSW CEU Credits.

March 2012: Core Courses One: The Nature of Barriers and the New Demographics

An introduction to inclusive design. Examines the social meaning of barriers in architecture and universal design. Disability demographics and the aging of post-industrialized societies are also discussed. Readings examine the "barrier" as encountered in everyday life and as an important theme in art and science and present the demographic rationale for universal design. Additional readings describe psychological and social issues of late adulthood, what aging means to older people and their families and the impact of culture on the experience of aging. * AIA members will receive 15 CEU Credits.
